Sharon Thomas has announced that she will seek re-election to the Las Cruces City Council in District 6.
“As a city councilor I have worked hard to ensure greater transparency, efficiency, and participation in city government. I also have been a strong advocate for better comprehensive planning. Thoughtful development is key not only to our community’s prosperity but also to maintaining and improving the quality of life for the people of Las Cruces.”
Over the past two years Thomas has worked for the creation of safe, walkable neighborhoods, citizen involvement in school location decisions, and greater integration of homeowner associations in decisions that affect their residents. She has played a key role in the development of bike lanes on city streets, efforts to control dust on the city’s east side, and river-to-mountain recreation corridors.
Comprehensive planning continues to be key, in Thomas’s view, for the city’s future.
“Taxpayers can’t afford the extra cost of piecemeal planning that increases the cost of infrastructure and hurts our quality of life. We need intelligent development. The VISION 2040 regional comprehensive plan as well as the new city Strategic Plan will be important for bringing everyone together to build a vibrant, attractive city for residents and businesses alike.”
Thomas has been at the center of council activity over the two years she has served. Among her areas of emphasis have been completion of subdivision infrastructure, an historic preservation ordinance, the addition of a competitive pool to the new Aquatic Center, regional recycling, solar power for city buildings, and lower utility costs to encourage business to locate in Las Cruces.
Thomas was elected by District 6 residents in January 2008 to finish the term of Las Cruces Mayor Ken Miyagishima.
